What You're Looking At

Every photo above is a real condition from an active job -- not a stock diagram. Here's what each type of work is actually doing.

1
Identify

Walk the job and find every penetration -- pipe, conduit, cable, duct -- through a rated wall or floor.

2
Match the System

Pick the UL-tested system for that exact penetration type and wall or floor assembly.

3
Seal

Install firestop caulking, spray fireproofing, or a tested collar/wrap per the system's listing.

4
Tag & Pass

Label the install and leave it ready for inspection -- code-compliant, not just "finished-looking."

Spray-applied fireproofing
The thick, textured coating you see on structural columns and ceiling decks. It protects the steel itself so it holds its strength longer in a fire -- a different job from sealing a penetration, and often needed on the same project. Also called spray fireproofing or fire spray.

Pipe and conduit penetration sealing
Anywhere a pipe, conduit run, or cable bundle passes through a fire-rated wall or floor, that opening has to be sealed with a tested system -- otherwise the wall's rating doesn't mean much. The red firestop material you see at the base of grouped pipes in several photos is exactly this -- fire stopping, along with fire caulking for the smaller joints and gaps.
Rated wall signage
"1 Hr Rated Fire Wall" and similar stenciled signs mark a wall's fire-resistance rating so every trade on the job knows it has to be protected -- a reminder that any new penetration cut into it needs to come back to a firestopping crew.
Top-of-wall and ductwork conditions
Where a wall meets the deck above, or where ductwork passes through it, needs its own tested detail -- a different system than a simple round pipe penetration.
