What is fire stopping, exactly?

Fire stopping (also written firestopping) seals the gaps where pipes, conduit, cable, and ductwork pass through a fire-rated wall or floor. Without a proper seal, that opening is a weak point where fire and smoke can spread -- the wall's fire rating doesn't mean much if the penetrations through it aren't sealed correctly.
